Spoon w/ Various Artists - Stranger Than Fiction Soundtrack
2006, Sony
D+
Califone, The Jam, and The Upsetters saved this one from an F.
An apt title for this review could be “How Spoon’s Piano Recitals Almost Put Me To Sleep.” Thanks, Britt, for going through Brian Eno’s garbage (apparently, Malkmus got wise and now locks his up), for making me feel like I should be Edward Norton in a Mini Cooper, chased by Charlize Theron, for making me feel like I’m in church (I hate church), and for leading a band called Spoon that lacks an actual player of spoons.
This soundtrack’s only consolations? Califone’s “Bottles And Bones (Shade And Sympathy)” is undoubtedly the best song ever written that most people still have not heard. The Jam, too, are great. The Upsetters are great; contrary to popular belief, one needs not smoke ganja to enjoy their peculiar genius. The ganja helps, though, if you’ve just listened to Spoon.
