2006, Sub Pop
People have been pillaging Brian Eno’s fecund 70’s period for decades now, with mixed results.
Case in point: The Album Leaf’s latest, Into The Blue Again: songwriter Jimmy LaValle’s music is pleasant and none of the songs are overtly bad (which in a way is unfortunate- I’d hoped to justify calling the album Into The Blue A-Gaggin), so the album hard to dislike- but it’s also pretty damn underwhelming.
With Into The Blue Again, we have gauzy instrumentals intercut with some decent synth-pop, but it’s nothing new. It’s organic sounding, but intensely repetitive. Listeners may find themselves satisfied by the first few tracks and forgo the rest. Or listen to Another Green World instead.
