World War Z - Max Brooks
2006, Crown
A+
People thought 9/11 would define the early 21st century, but America found a truer enemy when the dead returned to some kind of semi-life, craving flesh.
Each one of World War Z’s stories is more horrifying than the last. And there is blood and guts, but Brooks is refreshingly subtle: the more frightening details are in his hints and implications. In the book, Brooks covers all the bases- from the plague’s birth in China (forget about bird flu) to the disbelief, the great panic, and finally the war that turned the tide and pushed those zombie bastards to the fringe of existence, swimming, well, let’s just say beach tourism hits an all-time, Jaws-like low.
When your dog barks at night, don’t roll back over and assume Rex was just spooked by old man Henderson’s cat again (damn you, Henderson!). Destroy Rex’s canine brain.
Also not to be missed: Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide. People scoffed when it was published, but they probably didn’t envision their entrails on the dinner menu.
