Thanks a lot, Kevin. It's strange to go back into my parents' house and know that the old dog isn't there anymore. Even stranger is when I have brief thoughts about the fun things we used to do when I was a kid. Then, I remember that the old dog hadn't been able to jump and play for years, and yet I never mourned the loss until after she'd actually gone, and long after her agility and playfulness had gone.

We do have another dog, Teddy, that my brother rescued. She's great- like a white stuffed teddy bear. Funny thing is, at least once, each of us have said "Penny" accidentally when talking about Teddy.

You know what dude,

your so right in everything you said,
had a cat once, black as the night, lived for 20 years.

She joined us when we were at art college, moved with us round the country, got dressed up by the kids, wasnt much of a companion, smelt of fish and damp hair. became part of the family. Always on the window sill looking out for us to come home, but would ignore you once you fed her. Started getting kidney failure, kids wouldnt let her go, I couldnt upset the kids.

Her bright eyes stared deep into mine, it was her last goodbye. I got a phone call at work, went home to bury her in the garden. buried a lot of things.

Vowed never to have another, but kept seeing things move in the shadows around the house, and there were warm patches on the bed in the evening.

Got home one day to find a black kitten and two excited children. the shadows stopped moving.
