Side-projects by members of the New York-based Animal Collective are usually both frustrating and rewarding.
The new one by Collective drummer Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) fortunately leans more toward rewarding. Although not flawless like the group effort Feels, and sometimes maddeningly arty and diffuse, Person Pitch remains a beautiful effort- complete with wide open spaces in the production to make the perfect setting for Lennox’s vocals. Whenever I hear Panda Bear multi-tracking all over himself (I assume he keeps a towel handy), I imagine that this is how Brian Wilson’s music would’ve sounded- had he not gone bugshit crazy.
Wilson might tell you that given enough drugs (and an inevitably pickled liver), it may be possible to musically digest anything. Fortunately, unlike some other Collective projects (which are usually half gems, half murky weirdness), a suitcase full of drugs isn’t entirely necessary with Person Pitch.
