2007, Exit Stencil
Once in a while, a country record comes along with the rare ability to attract non-country fans.
Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan, March 16-20, 1992 by Uncle Tupelo, and I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes spring to mind. Well, Rest, the newest record by The Dreadful Yawns, is the newest record of that sort.
This laid-back, ambient, and relaxing record starts off with “You’ve Been Recorded,” a leisurely foot-tapping number with a wonderful guitar performance. The second song, “Changing States,” is nearly as good as the first, with padded-out drums carrying the whole number through. Background instruments get more and more upfront as the album progresses, with “We Go Up” driven almost exclusively by a high wall of sound practically in front of the picking guitars and soft vocals. Beautiful.
