Voxtrot - Voxtrot

Voxtrot - Voxtrot
2007, Play Louder

Most Indie bands are keen to put a record out as soon as they’ve been publicly acknowledged, and the result is often a garbled mess of poorly-rehearsed and selected nonsense.

Voxtrot went another direction: they released a series of EPs for a few years, forcing their fans to refresh Pitchfork for hours on end, hoping for news of an album in the works. Their self-titled debut lives up to the sky-high expectations, at least in my mind.

It’s hard to isolate what’s so good about this record. It could be the catchy tunes (”Blood Red Blood” closes the record and typifies a great pop song), the prominent yet subtle string arrangements (especially on “Ghost”), or the intimate vocals. In truth, it’s best to not try and pin it down, and just fearlessly proclaim that this is a great record.
