Liars - Liars

Liars - Liars
2007, Mute

Liars have made a pretty damn accessible album (compared to their past two), without compromising their sound one little bit.

This self-titled album is challenging, abrasive, danceable, and fucking rock n’ roll. It begins with the punk blast of “Plaster Casts of Everything,” then in a schizophrenic turnaround that illustrates the spirit of the album, drops into the funk of “Houseclouds,” which could pass for Odelay-era Beck.

Then, into the black hole: the repetitive, rhythmic, and often terrifying “Leather Prowler” sounds like nothing else. Next is another trip-hop excursion, “Sailing to Byzantium.”

Then, bizarrely enough, for the next 4 songs, the album becomes the best work that the Velvet Underground, Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Stooges never recorded together. Guitars are turned to eleven, candles are lit, and the vocals are darkly mumbled or incoherently shouted. I mean, the album was dark already, then it goes to Hell. “Freak Out” is the standout here — all fuzz and fuckery.

The final 3 songs work variations on these themes. This album is fucking amazing; 2007 keeps getting better and better.
