Devendra Banhart is criticized for the repetitive nature of many of his songs. This record is not like that at all, however, as the songs genre-hop more then Beck’s last LP.
The shining crown is “Seahorse,” an eight-minute epic that builds from an acoustic folk to piano ballad and finally to near-perfect rock song. This alone makes the record a great listen.
“Saved” is an R&B piece somewhat reminiscent of Frank Zappa’s “Go Cry On Somebody Else’s Shoulder” in that it initially seems out of place, but after repeated listens fits in perfectly. It is followed by a similarly out of place number called “Lover,” which is itself followed by an out of place number, and so on.
