Flight of the Conchords - The Distant Future EP

Flight of the Conchords - The Distant Future EP
2007, Sub Pop

Flight of the Conchords is some hilarious stuff; one might call them a “funny Tenacious D.”

Apparently they consider themselves “novelty rock,” though I’ve never heard the expression. This EP, foreshadowing an upcoming album of studio material, is promising.

The EP features three studio recordings of songs that have been featured on the Conchords’ excellent HBO series. The album versions are basically the same as on the show with a few minor differences, mostly in the lyrics. It’s good to hear the tracks recorded in the format they are satirizing, rather than in a live acoustic setting. For example, “Business Time” is a take off of every Barry White song ever recorded, and it sounds better with the steamy saxophone and all the other instrumentation then it did with just two guitars. The EP also features two live songs and a few minutes of live banter. They decided to include a live version of perhaps the most difficult song to pull off live, “Robots,” also known as “The Humans Are Dead,” an odd choice that points to a studio version on the upcoming album. We can only wait and see.

The album is something that you must experience for yourself. It is the funniest album i own, but it isn’t jut the comedy that makes it wonderful. it is also a fresh blend of sound that takes their music to the next level in my book. the Ep is only 5 bucks so go out and get it. I cant wait for the album because i know it will be fantastic.
