Thankfully, he doesn’t slow down long enough to become self conscious.
The result, occasionally, is a perfectly delivered gem. Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams’ latest release is excellent—probably his best work since the solo debut Heartbreaker. And that’s saying a lot. There simply aren’t any throwaway tracks here—just one strong song after another.
Songs like The Sun Also Sets, Two Hearts, and the terrific single Two are tragic ballads in the best Tom Waits tradition. Off Broadway is also remarkable, recalling a down-and-out Neil Young falsetto circa After the Gold Rush. Whatever tag you want to pin on Adams, he continues to defy easy categorization, and the Gram Parsons tag isn’t really sticking either. He’s just Ryan, and it’s hard to deny his impact as a premier songwriter, and easily one of the finest voices of this decade. This is a wonderful, wonderful record, very recommended.
