Frog Eyes - Tears of the Valedictorian

Frog Eyes - Tears of the Valedictorian
2007, Absolutely Kosher

This new record from Frog Eyes sounds a bit like Arcade Fire, especially the layered sound and vocal style. The difference is that this is a little less homogeneous, and a little less organized.

Good bits of guitar kind of fall apart in the song’s structure. For example, “Caravan Breakers, They Prey on the Weak and the Old” has moments where sections of guitar seemingly come out of nowhere for a few seconds in a disturbed refrain, only to fade out quickly to be replaced with the vocals.

Speaking of the vocals, they are bit more raw then I usually prefer. I don’t mind average singers (see Bob Dylan and Neutral Milk Hotel), which Carey Mercer certainly is; I don’t mind double-tracked vocals (see Elliott Smith and John Lennon), even if it’s poorly-synced; I don’t mind distorted vocal mixes (see Modest Mouse). If you have all three, though, it becomes a bit of a chore to listen to.
