Boredoms – Super Roots 9

Boredoms - Super Roots 9
2008, Thrill Jockey

Super Roots 9, Boredoms’ latest, is a 40+ minute single track live release of breathtakingness.

For those unfamiliar, Boredoms are a classic Japanese noise-rock band that consists of three drummers and (basically) a DJ, and this album sounds just like that looks (unless you’re thinking dance music).

Super Roots 9 documents a December 24, 2004 show in which the group performed with a 24-piece choir, and the experience can be sublime. The main shortcoming of albums like this, however, is that the recorded experience rarely approaches the live performance, and Super Roots 9, despite doing a heckofajob, doesn’t quite escape the trap. Play it loud on a good stereo or in your car on a long drive and it might do the trick.
