Video: Eddie Vedder – “Longing to Belong”

Up-and-coming Hawaiian musician Eddie Vedder recently released his sophomore album, Ukulele Songs — and now he’s strumming his way to San Diego.

With the soundtrack to Sean Penn’s 2007 film Into the Wild, Vedder entered the pop music lexicon seemingly out of the blue. Nobody quite knows where he come from, although there are rumors that the Seattle musician was in a rock band prior to embarking on his solo career. This year, he even released a DVD called “Water on the Road,” which chronicles his 2008 tour.

In all seriousness, Vedder will bring his uke — as well as acoustic and electric guitars and a 20-year career-spanning setlist — to San Diego’s Copley Symphony Hall on July 5. Swell Season/Frames lead singer Glen Hansard will open, and it’s going to be awesome.

In celebration of the show, we’re giving away a copy of Ukulele Songs on CD. For your chance to win, simply comment below and include your email address in the form (your email won’t be visible to the public). The winner will be selected at random and contacted on July 15.

  1. The uke’s popularity seems to keep growing, so much that a guitarist such as myself might finally take the $64 plunge and get one for myself. Then maybe I’ll teach myself to play by jamming to this record, just like I did with my guitar back in the day…to records by SRV, BB King, and Pearl Jam.

  2. Hi, the concert was AWESOME and I brought 3 others who weren’t fans, but now they are! His voice is so incredible and lyrics so deep. One friend thought the uke would be a snooze-fest —– so wrong. EV created energy and peace with that magical little instrument. I loved the show!

  3. Ukulele Songs is a beautiful album and shows the vulnerabilty of Eddie at a time in his life when things weren’t so great. I can’t wait to see him live and performing these songs along with all the other PJ and cover songs in his library.

  4. I’m looking forward to tonight’s show! Pre-party and after-party at Stout just a couple blocks away. I saw Detroit’s performance, and it was outstanding. Good luck to me for the CD!

  5. The Untold Story: This album was inspired by Dweezil Zappa’s legendary unreleased album, “My Ukulele Wants to Kill Your Mama”.
