MP3: Deadphones – “M.C.B.M”

San Diego’s Deadphones are unveiling the second single from their new album, and they’ve decided to offer it for free right here.

The rebranded Deadphones are comprised of the same five members from now-defunct trop-rockers Cuckoo Chaos, but the change runs deeper than just a name. Their self-titled debut, released last month on Waaga Records, finds the band exploring darker and more exotic alleyways than ever before.

“M.C.B.M” — which stands for “Mountains Can Be Moved” — exemplifies Deadphones’ new sound. There are plenty of hooks, but the real focus is on atmospheric, textural grooves. Scott Wheeler’s vocals have never sounded as nimble and impressive as they do here, soaring atop shimmering guitars and Garrett Prange’s dancey, slithering bass lines. The song is both melodic and ambient, with each instrument adding new geography to the shadowy soundscape.

You can feast your ears on “M.C.B.M” above. Once you’re done with that, you’ll probably want to go ahead and buy yourself a copy of Deadphones’ album here.
