Boy Without God‘s Gabriel Birnbaum isn’t just godless; he’s also restless. The overachieving singer-songwriter released Your Body Is Your Soul earlier this year, a captivating album propelled by Birnbaum’s insightful lyrics and creaking baritone. But while other musicians might be content to rest on their laurels, Birnbaum is already at work recording his follow-up to Soul, entitled God Bless the Hunger.

As if putting out back to back full-lengths weren’t enough, Birnbaum is also releasing two free EPs of material recorded in between those albums. The first EP, Eight Delicate Olives Slowly Chewed at Midnight, is already available as a free download from the Boy Without God blog. The second EP is due for release in a couple of months. Here’s what Birnbaum has to say about Olives:

Eight Delicate Olives Slowly Chewed at Midnight is a collection of home recordings that would in olden days have languished in the vaults. It’s composed of intimately recorded (read: demoed) instrumental one-offs and songs that I wrote and recorded in Copenhagen last fall that don’t quite fit in with the songs selected to go on my forthcoming full-length, God Bless the Hunger, and/or that I have forgotten how to play (numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, and the bridge to number 7, if you’re curious).

The [download] comes with eight, count em eight, lovely original artworks by Ty Williams. Print them out, put them on your walls, curl them under your pillow at night for good dreams, give them to your loved ones, write To Do lists on them, practice kissing on them when no one is looking. You know, all the stuff you usually do with good art.

As the above quote suggests, Boy Without God’s blog is a witty and insightful look into the artistic process. In fact, Birnbaum apparently loves blogging so much that he’s started a new one. The Ampeater Review is a new blog/record label that features free downloads of “digital 7-inches” from unsigned bands every weekday. Designed as a means for promoting fledgling artists, the site is a veritable goldmine for adventurous music lovers looking for something new, as well as a much needed outlet for bands in search of exposure.

We at Owl&Bear are grateful for Birnbaum’s tireless work ethic, and we think you should be too. So how about sending the poor guy some blankets and a pillow? It looks like he could use a nap.
