Chicago post-rockers The Sea and Cake have completed Car Alarm, their followup to 2007’s Everybody. The new record, their eighth LP, is scheduled for release on October 21.
According to Thrill Jockey, Car Alarm sounds like “The Sea and Cake in overdrive…a band that’s honed its songs to a hard edge.”
Frankly, this band “in overdrive” is kind of hard to imagine, but it’s also really interesting to know.

McCaskill picked me up at my folks’ house at 9PM. We weren’t planning to leave Jackson until about 1 or 2AM, but we’d decided to hang out a while and say goodbyes because, naturally, we may never come back.
Instead of going to the bar, for obvious reasons, we opted for dinner. Regardless, as with alcohol, we are both bottomless pits for food. The meal was uneventful, save for the fact that our waitress had apparently served McCaskill once before, and had taken offense to a conversation about foreskins. Despite this, the food was palatable and (hopefully) spit-free.

Prekop, Prewitt, and The Sea and Cake boys put on a great show Friday night in Philadelphia. The songs from Everybody, their 2007 Thrill Jockey release, translated well to a live setting, and their sped-up renditions did more justice to the songs than listeners might get from the compact disc. It’s one of those cases, I think, where the live show gives the record more vitality. A similar thing happened to me when I first saw Ted Leo on tour for Shake the Sheets. If this proves true (like with Ted Leo), Everybody could become one of my favorite albums.
2007, Thrill Jockey
Everybody is a good album, and The Sea & Cake’s new, improved sound might just attract scads of new listeners.
