Indie-rock veterans Nada Surf headlined San Diego’s Bring on the Bright Lights concert series on Saturday night at 4th & B in support of their seventh studio album, The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy. Following opening acts Republic of Letters, Cuckoo Chaos, and The Soft Pack (all of San Diegan droning descent), Nada Surf graced the stage with the double whammy of humility and assuredness that often eludes indie performances. Poetic Memory: Plateaus (List)

MP3: Plateaus – “Beach Coma”

This Saturday, August 20, San Diego punk band Plateaus will play the Soda Bar with fellow locals Heavy Hawaii, Beaters, and LA’s Bleached.

Plateaus, whose name comes from a “tongue-in-cheek statement about the SoCal music scene,” are comprised of Kevin Gist (lead guitar, vocals), Chris Rosi (rhythm guitar, vocals), Elliott Moeller (bass), and Jon Greene (drums). Despite a last-minute cancellation by Lykke Li, a sold-out crowd showed up Sunday for the FM94/9 Independence Jam in Oceanside. Several local bands on the Casbah stage traded sets with the main stage acts as the smell of kettle corn wafted through the air. The sun was out, the surf was near, and the music was top-notch as usual.

Photos of Everest, Heavy Hawaii, Surfer Blood, Band of Skulls, The Soft Pack, Crocodiles, Peter Bjorn and John, The Silent Comedy, and Cold War Kids are below. Continue reading…

Indie Jam Primer: Lykke Li – “Get Some”

Lykke Li performed her single “Get Some,” from her terrific new album Wounded Rhymes, on Jimmy Kimmel last night. San Diegans will be able to catch the sultry Swedish songstress at the FM 94/9 Independence Jam this weekend, along with Cold War Kids, Peter Bjorn and John, Band of Skulls, Everest, The Silent Comedy, Crocodiles, Surfer Blood, The Soft Pack, and Heavy Hawaii.

UPDATE: FM 94/9 just announced on their Twitter page that, due to a lost voice, Lykke Li has cancelled her Independence Jam appearance. Anybody looking for a refund is being directed to their website.

UCSD Soaks Up the Sun God

It’s safe to say that the summer festival has gone mainstream. With the Coachellas, Bonnaroos, and Sasquatches of the world selling out in record time, tickets to these highly anticipated festivals are becoming increasingly hard to come by. (Whether scalping has something to do with it is another subject entirely.)

And that’s why UCSD’s Sun God festival — taking place this Friday on the university’s campus — is such a welcome alternative: the day of music and festivities is only open to students and their invited friends. That means no scalping, boho-clad celebrities, or lingering $300 charges that take months to pay off. Continue reading…
