It had been a few years since Deerhoof last played San Diego. In recognition of that fact, the band spent much of Sunday’s set at the Irenic making sure to play songs from their last several albums. Frontwoman Satomi Matsuzaki’s cheerleading moves and crowd interactions added an extra dimension to Deerhoof’s sometimes wild and unpredictable music. Every song provided ample room for each member to take the lead and change the direction at any time. When it worked, which was most of the time, it was almost magical. During the rare times that it didn’t, it was still interesting to see how the band could save itself from disaster.
