Video: Califone – “Magdalene”

Indie experimentalists Califone just released the new video for “Magdalene,” from their excellent 2013 album, Stitches.

Lead singer Tim Rutili is a longtime movie fan and works in the film industry. As a result, he’s extremely reliable with his videos, from the single-take “Movie Music Kills a Kiss” starring Angela Bettis, to the immaculate and voyeuristic “Frosted Tips,” to the interactive video for the title track released via Tumblr.

The video for “Magdalene” was directed by Jessie Stein of The Luyas (who also sings on Stitches) and stop-motion animated by Amanda Bonaiuto.

About the video, Bonaiuto says, “There is a woman who lives on a lake. She is always there in her boat where she stares up, and only up at the stars. The stars are her sole friends and her only fascination. She has never noticed the merman who lives in the lake and probably never will. A watery scene filled with empty wine bottles and colorful hair gives us a view of their world.”

The song itself is one of the best from Stitches, with haunting pedal steel and lyrics about god, the devil, revenge, and more. If you haven’t picked up the album yet, you definitely should.
