California Boys

When you think of Southern California, it’s hard not to think of The Beach Boys. Since 1961, the legendary band has provided the official soundtrack to our fair state’s unique combination of girls, surfing, and sunshine. It’s only fitting, then, that the harmonious musicians are set to stop in San Diego on Friday, September 10.

Because putting a band like The Beach Boys in an indoor venue is like tossing a goldfish into a sandbox, the band will be playing at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. The outdoor, waterfront venue should provide the perfect backdrop to classics like “Little Deuce Coupe” and “Help Me, Rhonda.”

In its current formation, the band is led by original member Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who joined in 1965. Unfortunately, former Beach Boy Brian Wilson won’t be there, though rumor has it that there are plans for the eccentric genius to reunite with the band in some capacity soon.

In a recent interview, band member Al Jardine revealed that, in honor of the band’s fiftieth anniversary, a reunion is in the works. “We’re definitely doing at least one show – you heard it first,” Jardine said. “I don’t know where it will be yet, but it’ll probably be free. Golden Gate Park was mentioned, as was the [National] Mall in Washington DC and the north shore of Chicago by the beach.”

For the moment, Wilson continues to fly solo, but has still kept himself busy. On August 17, he released a new album, entitled Brian Wilson Reimagines George Gershwin, which featured captivating renditions of the famed composer‘s works.

The Humpheys show may not feature Wilson, but the existing lineup is still more than capable of knocking “Good Vibrations” out of the proverbial park. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
