Here Come The Undertones

Fans of old-school punk rock, rejoice. On June 3, San Diego will be treated to a set by none other than The Undertones.

Originally formed in 1975, the Northern Ireland band struck sonic gold in 1978 with the release of their debut single, “Teenage Kicks.” Declared by famed English DJ John Peel to be his favorite record of all time, the phenomenally catchy “Teenage Kicks” has become a classic of punk and new wave, and has been covered in varying fashion by groups like the Vibrators, Seabear, and Nouvelle Vague.

The Undertones were hardly one-hit wonders, though. The band released twelve more singles and four studio albums before breaking up in 1983, and the list of infectious, hormonal ditties they crafted in that time (“Girls Don’t Like It,” “Male Model,” “Here Comes the Summer,” etc.) goes on and on.

The group finally reunited in 1999, replacing original singer Feargal Sharkey with fellow Irishman Paul McLoone. The revised lineup has released two albums — 2003’s Get What You Need and 2007’s Dig Yourself Deep — and toured Europe and America several times over.

That penchant for touring will lead The Undertones to the Til Two Club on June 3, where they’ll be joined by San Diego’s The Widows, Portland’s Clorox Girls, and the local lasses of Jungle Fever. Tickets for the show can be purchased here.
