MP3: The Sea and Cake – “Up on the North Shore”

Chicago four-piece The Sea and Cake has played more than a thousand shows over the course of its career, and the band is still going strong.

This year, the post-rock quartet released The Moonlight Butterfly, revisiting the sense of playfulness that has marked its recent albums while bringing a bit more of its live energy into the studio.

The Sea and Cake’s sound continues to revolve around the interplay between guitarists Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt, bassist Eric Claridge (also an accomplished illustrator), and drummer/producer/post-rock legend John McEntire, with mastermind Prekop’s vocals serving as icing on the cake, so to speak. But Butterfly also finds the band trying out new structures and textures, even going on epic tangents like “Innkeeping” (see above video).

The Sea and Cake will play the Casbah on 12/7.
