Backed by the towering volumes in SDSU’s Malcolm A. Love Library, She & Him brought their own Volume 3 to the Open Air Theatre on Friday.
Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward performed various tracks from the new album, including highlights “I’ve Got Your Number, Son,” “Together,” and “I Could’ve Been Your Girl.” The wide-eyed Deschanel seemed a bit uncomfortable, but that didn’t detract from the impressive richness of her vocals. Ward seemed more in his element, slithering around the stage and striking rock-star poses.
Tilly & the Wall opened for She & Him, grinning and dancing up a storm for the still-arriving crowd. The sound guy at first seemed unsure how to handle the band’s mix of precocious pop and tap dancing but struck the proper balance in time for the triumphant set closer, “Pot Kettle Black.” Check out photos of both bands below.

Did the Tillies join She & Him on any songs?
No, I don’t think so.
