Who knew Bill Murray would only get better as he got older? The comedy veteran has spent recent years pivoting into deeper material and shining in films like Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Murray is set to continue his latter-day renaissance with St. Vincent, the new film from first-time director/screenwriter Ted Melfi.
The movie tells the story of Vincent (Murray), a cantankerous Brooklynite left broke from years of gambling and alcohol. When a new neighbor (Melissa McCarthy) moves in next door, Vincent seizes the opportunity to earn some extra cash by watching her 12-year-old son Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher). Vincent’s idea of babysitting includes taking the kid to bars and racetracks, teaching him how to fight, and hanging out with strippers like Daka, played by Naomi Watts.
If the trailer is any indication, St. Vincent will be a charming mix of raucous comedy and quieter character moments. It also looks like yet another perfect showcase for Murray’s unique brand of hangdog humor.
