San Diego: Win Tickets to See “Mistress America” on 8/25

For anyone who’s seen the terrific films Frances Ha or Lola Versus, Greta Gerwig needs no introduction.

For the rest of you, here it is: Gerwig is one of the funniest, brightest, and most magnetic actresses of our time. With her singular mix of charisma and vulnerability, she effortlessly carried the two afore-mentioned movies and stole the show in everything from the Ben Stiller vehicle Greenberg to the indie horror flicks Baghead and The House of the Devil.

So you can imagine how excited we are that Gerwig is reuniting with Frances Ha director Noah Baumbach for Mistress America. Co-written by Baumbach and Gerwig, Mistress America tells the story of Tracy (Lola Kirke), who’s just arrived in New York City to attend college. Her initial experiences in the big city fail to measure up to her expectations, but that changes when she’s taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Gerwig). Tracy is quickly seduced by Brooke’s carefree nature and metropolitan ways.

The trailer, which you can watch above, makes Mistress America seem very much like a spiritual sibling to Frances Ha, and that’s a very good thing. Mistress America opens on August 28, but 75 pairs of San Diegans can see a special early screening of the film for free, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Owl and Bear. The screening will take place on August 25 at 7:00pm at Landmark’s Hillcrest Cinemas.
