On May 3, Fleet Foxes released their sophomore effort, Helplessness Blues. It’s a rich, layered labor of love that finds the band shelving some of its crutches in favor of a more complex, thoughtful sound. Just like its self-titled predecessor, Helplessness Blues is receiving plenty of praise from critics, and the band’s concert tickets are selling like hotcakes.

According to Fleet Foxes pack leader Robin Pecknold, the record embraces more of a country feel than the band’s previous effort. Helplessness Blues is also a more adventurous album, incorporating a raft of new instruments like hammered dulcimer, zither, Moog, Tibetan singing bowls, and vibraphone. In fact, Pecknold has described the recording process as being so complicated that the band might do something more stripped-down next time.

This Friday, the band will play a sold-out show in San Diego, marking their first gig here since a Casbah appearance in 2008 and a Pecknold solo stint last year, when he opened for Joanna Newsom. It looks like the band’s small-venue days are over, though: this time around, Pecknold & Co. are going straight to Spreckels Theater.

Seattle folk-rockers Cave Singers will open. They’re touring to support their third LP, No Witch, which just came out in February. Get there early to catch them too.
