Anybody who has seen Little Hurricane play knows that the band’s impending yearlong adventure away from San Diego is a reason to be sad. In the past year, they’ve established themselves as one of our city’s fastest rising and most dynamic acts, and their absence is sure to create a void in the local music scene.

Luckily, there’s still a chance to give them a proper sendoff. The blues-rock duo will play a farewell show at Bar Pink this Saturday, November 27th, and you don’t want to miss it. In addition to Little Hurricane, two great opening acts will be on hand — first, the always-amazing Erika Davies will enchant with her velvety voice, then The Brothers Grimm (aka Josh and Jeremiah Zimmerman from The Silent Comedy) will get things cooking with their fraternal folk.

In anticipation of the show, Little Hurricane were kind enough to perform an exclusive session for us at NBC Studios. Check out the video and MP3s above, then head out to Bar Pink on Saturday to see them off in style.

Mini Mansions Get Big

MP3: Mini Mansions Daytrotter Session

LA’s Mini Mansions, the side project of Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman, will play the Tin Can Alehouse on Monday, November 29th.

The trio released its self-titled debut earlier this month on QOTSA front man Joshua Homme’s Rekords Rekords label, and it’s truly a stunning piece of work. The record fuses elements of Grizzly Bear’s psych-pop with Mike Patton’s sinister, cinematic tones, resulting in one of the year’s strongest and strangest releases. Continue reading…

Poetic Memory: Pomegranates (List)

When your band draws frequent comparisons to established acts like The Flaming Lips, Deerhunter, and Broken Social Scene, you must be doing something right. Just ask Pomegranates, who released their third album, One of Us, last month. Thanks to its swooning production and assured energy, the record has already climbed to #7 on the CMJ Top 200 Chart.

You can experience Pomegranates’ sugary sounds firsthand on Wednesday, November 17th, when the Cincinnati band plays the Casbah. In anticipation of the show, vocalist/guitarist Joey Cook was kind enough to share some of his influences. You can check out the list and the rest of Pomegranates’ tour dates below. Poetic Memory: Dr. Dog (List)

MP3: Dr. Dog – “Nobody Knows Who You Are”

Few bands inspire as much good feeling as Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog. The psych-rock band released its fifth album, Shame, Shame — and its first since singing with ANTI- Records — earlier this year to critical acclaim. Thanks to high-powered ditties like “Shadow People” and “Later,” Shame, Shame is a lean and assured collection of catchy, melodic tunes that cements Dr. Dog’s status as one of indie rock’s most beloved acts. The album has just been re-released in a special edition that includes four new tracks.

Dr. Dog have been supporting the album with some extensive touring that has them traipsing across the country through February. Lucky for San Diego, that tour includes a stop at the Belly Up on November 6. In anticipation of the show, keyboardist Zach Miller was kind enough to share some of his influences with us. His Poetic Memory, the new video for “Shadow People,” and the rest of Dr. Dog’s tour dates are below. Continue reading…

Video: The Soft Pack – “More or Less”

MP3: The Soft Pack – “Gagdad”

When the Los Angeles Times, SPIN, Paste, Q, NME, and Mojo all say that you should keep an eye on a certain band, they’re probably not wrong — especially when the band in question is San Diego’s The Soft Pack.

The punk four-piece has spent much of the past year touring here, there, and/or everywhere in support of their acclaimed self-titled debut, out now on Kemado Records. They’re currently sharing headlining duties with none other than Kurt Vile, and to celebrate their newfound success they’re hocking a very limited edition seven-inch entitled “Gagdad” at each show.

You can snatch up a copy of the record on November 13th at the Casbah, when The Soft Pack’s tour finally draws to a close. We’re offering you a chance to see them for free — all you have to do is comment below and include your email address in the form (your email won’t be visible to the public). The winner will be chosen at random on November 9, 2010. Enter to win, and check out the rest of their tour dates, below. Continue reading…
