You Owe Infinity Dollars Jammie Thomas-Rasset, the first woman who was charged with copyright infringement and offered to settle but decided to fight the RIAA, is guilty and owes the recording industry 1.92 million dollars, or $80,000 per song. Get a Life, Holden Caulfield What once seemed like courageous truth-telling now strikes many students as “weird,” “whiny” and “immature.” Playboy Acquires Rights to Serialize Nabokov’s Final Work Every now and then, Playboy publishes something that really does compel people to pick up the magazine for the articles. The latest addition to this list is The Original of Laura, the novella Vladimir Nabokov was scribbling onto index cards until his death in 1977. Vic Chesnutt Makes ‘Cut’, Announces U.S. Tour (MP3)

Vic Chesnutt

This fall, Vic Chesnutt will tour to support At the Cut, his latest effort. Chesnutt’s touring band will feature Guy Picciotto (Fugazi) and members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion. The album (also featuring Piccioto and Co.) is a follow-up to 2007’s North Star Deserter, which SPIN called “disturbingly palpable dread-folk.” At the Cut comes out September 22 on Constellation Records.

At the Cut was recorded by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire) in Montreal. Its opening track, “Coward,” was written for director Jem Cohen’s Empires of Tin, and the song’s success evidently inspired Chesnutt to create a whole new album. The album will be released on CD and LP with artwork curated by Jem Cohen.

Chesnutt has released 15 critically acclaimed records; my favorite is West of Rome (especially the remastered edition). Songs from Rome have been featured, many, many times on the Owl and Bear podcast. Chesnutt has also been covered by a number of artists, including R.E.M., the Smashing Pumpkins, Sparklehorse, and even Madonna. He was also subject of the 1992 PBS documentary Speed Racer and he appeared in the Oscar Award-winning film Sling Blade. Quite an interesting fellow, this Chesnutt. Saw him perform back in 2005, and it was an affair to remember.

Check out “Chain” (MP3), the first single from At the Cut. Tourdates are after the jump. Continue reading

MP3: The Felice Brothers – “Frankie’s Gun”

The Duke & the King, a new Huckleberry Finn-inspired project led by Simone Felice of the Felice Brothers, can be best described as loping, sun-faded melodic pop with touches of country, gospel, and folk. Continue reading…

Fruit Bats to ‘Ruminate,’ Tour Extensively (MP3)

Fruit Bats
It’s been 4 years since Fruit Bats put out a new record (not including an excellent tour-only LP), so it’s with open arms that we embrace (how else do you do it?) the latest offering from Eric D. Johnson and Co. The Ruminant Band will be released on August 4 in both CD and gatefold LP fashion.

Excellently, if you pre-order through Sub Pop on or before the release date, the ‘Pop will shave $2 off the ‘Bats album’s “already well-priced price.” SubPop also promises to enclose trinkets and doodads and “whatever else they can find” to spruce up the package, but that’s not news; they’ve always been good for that. Consider it pre-ordered, SubPop. MP3 and tourdates after the jump. Continue reading
