Video: Wild Flag – “Romance”

So, listen. This is normally where we’d tell you that Wild Flag just put out the video for “Romance,” the first single off their self-titled debut. We’d also let you know that the band is comprised of Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of the legendary Sleater-Kinney, Mary Timony of Helium, and Rebecca Cole of The Minders. We might even tell you that the video was directed by Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show.

But none of that matters. Well, it does matter, but it’s not as important as this: Wild Flag’s new album is incredible. Not only does it capture everything that fans of Sleater-Kinney have sorely missed since that band’s 2006 breakup, it takes that formula and tweaks it with just enough surprises — courtesy of Timony and Cole, we presume — that the end result is one of the freshest, most accomplished, and goddmamn rocking-est albums of the last decade. That the supergroup pulled off such a feat is no surprise, but it doesn’t lessen the impact of Wild Flag’s pitch-perfect rock knocking you in the ass like one of Brownstein’s patented high kicks.

So yeah, we like Wild Flag. Watch the video, then go see them at the Casbah on November 1. Full list of Wild Flag tour dates is below…

At long last, the debut album from Wild Flag has a release date.

Wild Flag are, of course, the supergroup comprised of Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney), Mary Timony (Helium), Rebecca Cole (The Minders) and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi). Until now, the band has only put out one recording, the “Future Crimes”/”Glass Tambourine” 7-inch released on Record Store Day. The 2-song single was a tantalizing calling card for the group’s full-length debut, and now we know when we’ll get to hear it. Continue reading…

Born to be ‘Wild’

Since Sleater-Kinney‘s breakup in 2006, fans of the trio have held out hope for a reunion. The Olympia, Washington band dissolved at the height of its creative powers, having just released its seventh album, the classic rock-influenced The Woods.

The group had originally emerged out of Olympia’s mid-90s riot grrl scene, but quickly differentiated itself through its use of sharp guitar hooks, distinctive harmonies, and politically savvy lyrics. By the time of their breakup, Sleater-Kinney were more than just critical darlings — they were fiercely cherished by fans in a way that few bands come close to achieving. Now, at long last, those fans will be treated to a Sleater-Kinney reunion — well, sort of. Continue reading…
