If there were any doubts as to how big Little Hurricane have gotten, Saturday’s sold-out show at the Casbah laid them to rest. The nomadic duo returned from a “slow tour” of the country to celebrate the release of its debut album, Homewrecker, and pretty much all of San Diego came out to join in the festivities.

The time on the road has only sharpened the band’s skills. CC and Tone tackled each Homewrecker track with focused energy and unwavering professionalism, much to the crowd’s delight. The impressive turnout made it hard to believe that the last San Diego show they played was at Bar Pink. At this rate, the next time Little Hurricane come to town they’ll be too big even for the Casbah. Check out our photos of the show.

Little Hurricane Blow Back Into Town

On April 2nd, Little Hurricane will blow back into San Diego for a show at the Casbah.

The San Diego duo made quite the splash around town last year, winning a San Diego Music Award for Best New Artist, rocking Rocktoberfest, and becoming the first band to perform for the Owl and Bear-programmed SoundDiego Sessions. But, just as we were getting to know and love them, Little Hurricane left San Diego to tour the country with no return date in sight.

Their wanderings may not be at an end yet, but that doesn’t mean they can’t come back and visit once in a while, and they’ll do just that on April 2nd for their CD release party at the Casbah. Also playing that night: Get Back Loretta, River City, and Low Volts. Continue reading…

Album Review: Little Hurricane – “Homewrecker”

Little Hurricane blew in and out of San Diego like the force of nature they’re named after. Over the coarse of a single year, the two-piece burst onto the scene, quickly became one of the city’s most promising acts, won Best New Artist at the San Diego Music Awards, then moved away to roam the country like nomads.

That whirlwind romance has made Little Hurricane feel like the band that got away, but now the just-released Homewrecker has arrived like a love letter out of the blue. The ominous “Trouble Ahead” kicks off the album with a Kim Thayil-inspired riff chugging beneath Anthony Catalano’s seething vocals, but it isn’t long before the Soundgarden influence defers to a more prominent muse.

The similarities between Little Hurricane and The White Stripes are easy to spot and hard to ignore. Both are male/female blues-rock duos, and Catalano’s voice has that same choked power that gives Jack White’s delivery its visceral heft. But throughout Homewrecker, yet another point of comparison becomes apparent in Celeste Spina’s backups, which are sung with a ghostly airiness — first on the call and response of “Crocodile Tears” and then on the slow-burning “Shortbread” — that bears a striking resemblance to Meg White. In Little Hurricane’s live sets, Spina’s voice is barely audible above the crack of her drums, but on record the Meg-iness is unmistakeable. Continue reading…
