Review: Greg Gibson at The Latent Print Party; March 24th, 2010; Whistle Stop Bar, San Diego

San Diego literary and arts website The Latent Print said goodbye to Publisher/Managing-Editor/Swing-Dancer-Extraordinaire Charlie Yi at a farewell party at the Whistle Stop on Wednesday night. A mixed lineup of music, poetry, and fiction readings entertained the full house that showed up in Yi’s honor, and the night was capped off with a show by Greg Gibson, former guitar player in local favorites Waterline Drift. The Metric System

The last time Metric came to town, it was for the 94/9 Independence Jam in Oceanside. The Canadian quartet had third billing at the outdoor festival, overshadowed by big-name groups the Black Keys and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But that didn’t stop them from blowing those bands away with their infectious, moody synth-pop.

Now, Metric are set to wow us again. The band is playing San Diego Indiefest on March 27th, and this time they’re at the top of the bill. Continue reading…

Review: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with The Whigs; March 13, 2010; House Of Blues, San Diego

A couple of years ago, staring down the barrel of my approaching thirties and in peak quarter-life crisis mode, I came up with the obvious solution to my ennui — I bought a motorcycle. Even though my riding phase lasted less than a year, it was awesome, and 90% of the sonic fuel blasting freedom and badassery into my helmet was none other than Athens, Georgia’s The Whigs. When I heard these dudes were in town to support fellow joyride soundtrackers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I threw on my Zeke Death Alley biker shirt and my finest tattered jeans and headed down to House of Blues to rock it out.
