Live Photos & Video: Miss Erika Davies at the Habitat House, July 17, 2011

The Habitat House proved an ideal setting for Miss Erika Davies‘ CD-release show on Sunday. The intimacy of the living room venue lent itself perfectly to the raw emotion of Davies’ incredible voice as she treated the crowd to songs from her SDMA-nominated Galaxy Lakes LP. Backed by a rotating cast of musicians that included regulars Gary Hankins and Chris Carroll, Tri Gadjo members Aaron Mahn and Jeremy Eikam, and her own sister Katy, Davies demonstrated once again why she’s one of San Diego’s brightest stars.

In addition to her SDMA nomination, Davies is currently competing to be one of five San Diegans to appear on NBC’s hit reality show The Voice. You can vote for her on Thursday, July 21 here. In the meantime, check out some photos and video of Sunday’s show below. Continue reading…

Erika Davies Shoots for the Stars

Miss Erika Davies‘ new album is fantastic, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. The spritely singer has been wowing audiences for years with her one-of-a-kind voice and heartfelt jazz numbers, cultivating a reputation as one of San Diego’s finest musicians.

Last year, Davies’ charms were beamed across the country, thanks to a hit Subaru commercial that featured her song, “I Love You, I Do.” The thousands that clamored for their own copy of the charming ditty were out of luck, though — at least until now.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Davies has just self-released her full length-debut, entitled Galaxy Lakes. Those who have seen Davies perform will recognize many of the compositions, from the maudlin “Tumbleweed” to the bouncy “Robot Girl” to the intoxicating title track, which is one of the most affecting songs you’ll hear all year.

Unsurprisingly, the record has been nominated for Best Jazz Album at the upcoming San Diego Music Awards, which will be held on August 8 at Humphreys by the Bay.

While we wait to see if Davies takes home some well deserved SDMA gold, you can order a copy of Galaxy Lakes here. Or, even better, pick up the LP in person on July 17 at the Habitat House during Davies’ CD-release show, where she’ll be joined by Trio Gadjo.

By now, most people with a television set or a YouTube account have seen the Subaru commercial graced with Miss Erika Davies‘ lovely voice. But 30 seconds isn’t really long enough to appreciate the San Diego singer’s plentiful talents, so it’s a good thing she went and made a video for the whole song. Continue reading…

SoundDiego Sessions vol. 3 – Erika Davies

We do a lot of talking about the amazing Erika Davies around these parts, but sometimes words just aren’t enough. So, for all you visual learners out there, we had Miss Davies and her band come into the NBC studios to record some songs for us. Watch the video for “Robot Girl” above, then go see her at the Whistle Stop tonight, where she’ll be opening for The Mashtis.

Davies is currently at work on her full-length debut, Galaxy Lakes, and it’s going to be a great one. Unfortunately, the process has stalled due to a lack of funding, but there is something you can do to help.

The swanky vocalist has launched a Kickstarter page to help raise money to complete the album. She has until February 18 to get $2000 in pledges, and she needs your help to do it. Head over to the page and donate whatever you can. Depending on the amount pledged, backers will receive any of a variety of rewards that includes an autographed copy of Galaxy Lakes, a signed 8×11 tintype photo print of the cover art, and a handwritten, signed lyric book.

All in all, it’s a great way to help one of San Diego’s finest musicians achieve their dream. And, on a selfish note, we all get a fantastic album out of it. See? Giving truly is its own reward.

The Smart Brothers Plan Musical “Jubilee”

MP3: The Smart Brothers – “Make it Last”

In a show modeled after Martin Scorsese’s epic 1978 concert film The Last Waltz, The Smart Brothers and a cast of local all-stars will give 2010 a big sendoff at the Casbah on December 28.

The acclaimed San Diego trio — you may remember them from their charming, Owl and Bear-programmed SoundDiego LIVE performance back in October — has invited Gregory Page, Erika Davies, John Meeks and Sara Petite, among others, to perform with them. Continue reading…
