MP3: The Cave Singers – “Swim Club”

Over the past year, rustic folksters The Cave Singers have toured Europe, Asia, and North America (several times), supporting the likes of Fleet Foxes, Wanda Jackson, and Neko Case. And amidst all that touring, the band still found time to release its third album, No Witch, its best album to date.

The Seattle trio will close out the long year with a string of West Coast dates, with like-minded Northwesterners The Builders and the Butchers joining them along the way. Both bands will play the Casbah on December 9. Full list of tour dates is below.

My Morning Jacket Premiere Video for “Holdin’ On To Black Metal”

Indie-rock mainstays My Morning Jacket have released a new video. According to a press release:

The eye-popping, surreal video for “Black Metal” was filmed during whirlwind period shortly before the quintet’s new album, Circuital, was released. The band kept things local by working with the Louisville-based Sole Solution Studio for the clip, and filmed it at the idiosyncratic local watering hole Jim Porter’s Good Time Emporium. The video also includes footage from the Jacket’s electrifying 2011 Bonnaroo performance.

My Morning Jacket are currently touring the country with the red-haired, golden-voiced Neko Case, but unfortunately no San Diego show is planned. To see whether your town fared any better, take a gander at the full list of dates below. Continue reading…

Listen to Neko Case and Nick Cave’s Zombies Cover

It’s a beautiful thing when stars align.

And so, when it was first announced that Neko Case and Nick Cave — two of the most talented people making music today, period — were going to collaborate on a cover of The Zombies’ classic “She’s Not There” for the season premiere of HBO’s True Blood, we were more than a little excited. We thought we were going to have to wait until the June 26 premiere and/or steal cable to hear the song, but now the wait is over. Continue reading…

Contest: Win Michael Showalter’s Book, Get Into His Funny Pants

Michael Showalter, perhaps best known from a previous post on this website, has written his first book, Mr. Funny Pants, which he describes as a “humorous quasi-memoir.” With a release party that featured Neko Case and a few other stops under what might be a very droll belt, his book tour is currently unfolding.

As Showalter travels around two-thirds of the countries in NAFTA, be sure to see him. San Diego people, your chance is tomorrow at the Casbah at 6:30pm. Non-San Diego people, you can find his full tour information here.

Oh, and if you haven’t picked up a copy of the book, here’s your chance to obtain one for free. We’ve got 6 copies to give away thanks to the nice folks at Grand Central Publishing. Want one?

To enter the contest, simply leave a comment on this here post and include your email address in the form (your email won’t be visible to the public). The contest ends March 20, 2011, at midnight and winners will be chosen at random. The contest is open to residents in the United States and Canada. No PO Boxes, please, and only one copy per household.

Poetic Memory: Audra Mae (List)

L.A.’s Audra Mae is not your average folk singer-songwriter. With pipes that approach Neko Case and a soul like Janis Joplin, she possesses a kind of sincerity that speaks to you but doesn’t succumb to the over-sharing that plagues the genre.

She might be best known for covering Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” (and it is an excellent cover), but you don’t really get a sense of what she’s capable of until you hear a song like “Cliche.”

In anticipation of her show with Good Old War and Yukon Blonde at the Soma side stage this Wednesday, June 9, we got a chance to hear her top ten moments to seize.
