Poetic Memory: KNESSET (List)

Phoenix and Los Angeles-based art rockers KNESSET aren’t coming to San Diego anytime soon, but that certainly doesn’t preclude them from sending us a detailed and most excellent list of great music videos.

KNESSET are kindred spirits with bands like American Analog Set, Camera Obscura, Owen, and Joan of Arc, with whom they share a label in Japan. Songs like “Bitter Hearts” (video above) from KNESSET’s debut LP, Coming of Age, feel just right in a musical rotation that includes the aforementioned company.

The band released Coming of Age in February, and you can buy it now for as little as five bucks on their Bandcamp page. Do check it out — and while you listen, peruse their Poetic Memory (below). It’ll be worth your while. Continue reading…

Josh Ritter Returns to San Diego

In 2010, Josh Ritter put out one of the year’s flat-out best albums. The lyrical So Runs the World Away was a beautiful collection of songs that showcased Ritter’s uncanny gift for marrying gorgeous compositions with heartbreaking narratives. It made its way onto several year-end lists, including Owl and Bear’s fancy Best of 2010 one, and every bit of the attention was deserved.

So you can forgive the guy for taking a victory lap. Continue reading…

Video: The Prids – “I’ll Wait”

The Prids have released a video for “I’ll Wait,” one of the best tracks on their excellent 2010 release Chronosynclastic. The band has been slowly but surely releasing videos for each of the album’s tracks; “I’ll Wait” is the eighth song on the album (and the fifth video), and features Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch on guitar and harmony vocals.

Video: Scattered Trees – “Love and Leave”

If the weeks following Comic-Con have you suffering from cosplay withdrawal, don’t worry — we’ve got your methadone right here. The Star Wars-themed video for “Love and Leave,” by Chicago’s Scattered Trees, tells the story of the unlikely romance between a storm trooper and his captive princess.

The clever premise and twist ending make for an entertaining video, but the real star of the show is Scattered Trees’ slow-burning ballad. “Love and Leave” can be found on the band’s emotional debut album, Sympathy, now available for purchase.

You can also pick up a copy in person this Friday, August 5 at the Casbah, when Scattered Trees play with The Alternate Routes. Tickets for the show can be bought here. Slave Leia outfits are optional but, as always, highly recommended.
