Contest: Win Tickets to See OK Go at UCSD on 5/31

Los Angeles quartet OK Go are coming to San Diego and, if the above video is any indication, UCSD students have already put on their dancin’ shoes.

OK Go, known in no small way for their meticulously choreographed music videos, are touring to support their 2010 album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, and will play the Price Center West Ballroom at UCSD on May 31. Tickets are $10 for UCSD’s graduating seniors, $20 for lesser students, and $27 to the general public. Buddha’s Playlist will open.

For those who don’t feel like throwing down the dough to see Ok Go, we’re offering up a pair of tickets to the concert. To enter the contest, simply comment via Facebook (below) by May 29.

Video: Xray Eyeballs – ‘Egyptian Magician’

On May 22, Xray Eyeballs will set their sights on Bar Pink. The Brooklyn band’s dark but upbeat stylings have earned them comparisons to The Jesus and Mary Chain, but while both bands update traditional punk with hazy, washed-out guitars, Xray Eyeballs also bring a killer sense of melody to the table.

The emphasis on catchiness is no accident. According to frontman O.J. San Felipe, “I just wanted to make every song sound like a lullaby. To me, lullabies are the most memorable kind of songs; everyone remembers them from when they’re babies.” But before you consider taking your kids with you to the show, you might want to take San Felipe’s other favorite themes into account. “I think people like songs they can relate to, with things like love, loss, dark vices, and sex.”

For a taste of those dark vices, check out “Egyptian Magician” above or — if you’re boss isn’t looking — the NSFW video for “Crystal.” Xray Eyeballs will be joined at Bar Pink by San Diego’s own Trap Gold, who are no strangers to getting down and dirty either.

There Will Be ‘Blood’

When people use the words “dance” and “trip” in the same sentence, it’s usually to describe my clumsy, ill-advised attempts to bust a move at Booty Basement. But thankfully, there’s now a much more exciting — and less embarrassing — reason to use those words together.

On May 21, Yeasayer will bring their dancey, trippy stylings to the Belly Up. The Brooklyn six-piece is still flying high after the release of its stunning sophomore album, Odd Blood, which earned the band a place of honor on Owl and Bear’s Best of 2010 list. Continue reading…

Video: The Boyish Charms – “The Tweed Twig”

Sure, groups like Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes know how to make great music, but can they make you laugh? The ability to properly tickle the funny bone is rare in indie rock, and it’s what gives The Boyish Charms an edge over the competition.

That comic sensibility is on full display in the San Diego band’s new video for “The Tweed Twig.” The ridiculously catchy song is the first single off The Boyish Charms’ latest album, the tongue-twistingly-titled Infinity in its Infancy (available now on white vinyl).

In the Gerry Saucedo-directed clip, band members Robbie Lawson and Cam Jones rack up late fees at some place called Blockbuster Video, go on a wild shopping spree at Horton Plaza, and impress strangers with their sensual corn dog-eating abilities. The video also stars Red Pony Clock frontman Gabe Saucedo (brother of Gerry) as “Marsellus the Mailman.”

Check out the ensuing hilarity above, then catch The Boyish Charms on May 26, when they’ll play with A Book About Elephants and Seed at the Park Gallery.

Live Photos and Video: The Pipettes at the Casbah, May 5, 2011

Nearly four years after the 2007 wildfires forced them to cancel a scheduled gig, The Pipettes finally returned to San Diego on Thursday. Well, at least one Pipette did. Former members RiotBecki and Rosay departed the band in 2008 and, several lineup changes later, the group is now comprised of original member/Hitchcock-blonde Gwenno Saunders and her sister Ani.
