Indie-rock veterans Nada Surf headlined San Diego’s Bring on the Bright Lights concert series on Saturday night at 4th & B in support of their seventh studio album, The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy. Following opening acts Republic of Letters, Cuckoo Chaos, and The Soft Pack (all of San Diegan droning descent), Nada Surf graced the stage with the double whammy of humility and assuredness that often eludes indie performances. 2011 was a mixed bag. Established acts like Radiohead and The Strokes dropped duds on trusting fans, while middle-of-the-road acts like The Drums and Hunx and His Punx raised the bar with surprising sophomore efforts. Floundering bands like Iron & Wine and The Dodos made welcome returns to glory, while others merely treaded water (see She and Him’s Christmas album or MGMT’s “mix tape.”) Continue reading…

Saturday night’s New Year’s Eve celebration at the Lafayette Hotel bid a fun farewell to 2011, thanks to the presence of some of San Diego’s best bands and plenty of hangover-inducing alcohol. The hotel’s Lafayette and Mississippi rooms served as dual stages for bands like Transfer, The Heavy Guilt, and The Creepy Creeps, one-man-band Low Volts played in the lobby, and the lovely ladies of Hell on Heels Burlesque strutted their stuff poolside. Headliners The Silent Comedy took to the stage just before midnight to make sure that the first thing attendees heard in 2012 was great music.
Because we love you, we put down our drinks long enough to snap some pictures of The Silent Comedy’s set, which you can see below. And, even though we’re technically a music site, we figured you’d want to see photos of Hell on Heels Burlesque too, so enjoy. Photos may be NSFW depending on how your boss feels about girls in pasties. Check out the photos…

Working for San Diego’s most beloved animal-named music blog means seeing a lot of shows. Going to so many concerts, it’s easy to become jaded, and even the prospect of seeing bands you love more than once can feel like a chore. But no matter how many times they come to town, we never get tired of Mini Mansions.
The LA trio tackled their first headlining Casbah gig with style, wowing the crowd with the diabolical, harmonious sounds that made their 2010 debut such a treat. The band performed new songs from its in-progress sophomore album, as well as covers of Sparks’ “Sherlock Holmes” and Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” The set was yet another home run for Mini Mansions, and left us looking forward to seeing them again.
