Spoon Schedule Show in La Jolla, Release New Single (Stream)

Spoon - Written in Reverse

Britt Daniels and his band Spoon recently released details about their new album, Transference, which is set to be released January 19 on Merge Records. Today, Daniels & Co. unveiled the album’s first single, the vintage-sounding “Written in Reverse”.

The single will be officially released January 5, but if you’d rather not use a fork to scratch the new-Spoon itch, you can stream it at the Merge Records online store. The band will also do a mini tour of the ‘States this December, including a gig at UC San Diego’s RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. Then, in February, they’ll head to sunny Europe. Dates are after the jump. The sheer jubilation you enjoyed when the anthemic chorus erupted and subsided, sending chills down your spine? Alex Ebert sure does like to reinvent himself. First a rapper, then the flamboyant front man for the goofy post-glam Ima Robot, Ebert has reformed himself once again—this time as the messianic mastermind behind Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. In the persona of Edward Sharpe, he presides over a dedicated troupe of musicians/followers who create alternately sentimental and moody rock reminiscent of 60s hippie-folk and Ennio Morricone film scores. Tijuana/British Columbia/Oakland/Michigan San Diego post rockers Tristeza are back with a new album, and on Fate Unfolds, everything happens for a reason. Everything, meaning funk, jazz, flamenco, tropicalia, raga, krautrock, psyche, and punk.

It’s been about three years since En Nuestro Desafio, so Fate Unfolds is a welcome return. For a sample of the new album, check out this MP3 of “Manitas“.

The first thing you notice about Charlie Fink is how young he looks. With his curly, tussled hair resting atop an angular but cherubic face, Fink hardly seems like the person responsible for the world-weary outlook and deep, creaky vocals that have come to characterize Noah and the Whale’s sound. Of course, the band’s music wasn’t always grim—it used to be as youthful and fresh as Fink’s appearance. Continue reading
