Go See April Smith at Lestat’s on 6/16

That headline is not advice; it’s an order.
Spunky little April Smith and her band the Great Picture Show will play Lestat’s Coffee House in Normal Heights on June 16, and if you go (and you’d damn well better better), she will literally knock your socks off. If you’re wearing sandals or flip flops, make sure you fasten them to your ankles.
I stand by what I said when I wrote about her back in February:
If I was only allowed to say one thing about April Smith, it’s that she can sing. Fortunately, there’s plenty of space here to gush about the Brooklyn-based belter: she also has an electric presence, she writes damn good songs, and she’s pretty much destined for greatness.
At that point, I had just watched her upstage the impossibly charismatic Langhorne Slim. Think about that for a minute. Downloads and tour dates are below…
Poetic Memory: Langhorne Slim (List)

A few weeks ago, Langhorne Slim and his ridiculously good band played the Casbah. We loved it, and as with many who’ve seen him on this tour, an obsession was born.
We recently asked Langhorne and his band — Jeff Ratner, David Moore, and Malachi DeLorenzo — to reveal their Poetic Memories, and they came back with a wide-ranging and reliable list that sheds light on what they’re reading, watching, and playing. Check it out below. (more…)

April Smith at the Casbah - February 8, 2010
If I was only allowed to say one thing about April Smith, it’s that she can sing. Fortunately, there’s plenty of space here to gush about the Brooklyn-based belter: she also has an electric presence, she writes damn good songs, and she’s pretty much destined for greatness.
When I recently saw her perform with Langhorne Slim, I wanted to find her after the show and say, “What are you doing here? You should be on Broadway.” I never got a chance to have the conversation. However, she was nice enough to provide us with a wide-ranging list of influences.
If you’re even remotely interested in April Smith, definitely check out her song Colors (MP3), download her recent Daytrotter session, and catch her on tour. It’ll be worth your while. Her first album, Songs For A Sinking Ship, is out February 23rd. Tour dates and her Poetic Memory are below.
Review: Langhorne Slim with April Smith and the Great Picture Show; February 8, 2010; Casbah
I’ve never understood the significance of The Casbah’s “Anti-Monday League,” except that the bands are better than average and that it seems to draw the scene. I’ve found that it does not mean drink specials, but scenesters don’t need specials anyway when PBR tall boys are cheaper than water. Looking around, I assumed the bands would be an afterthought for this crowd and that I would be one of the only true Langhorne Slim fans — but then he came on and everyone started shouting the words! I’ve been too judgmental, scene kids. Your taste is exquisite. I’m sorry. Hold me. (more…)

Download: Langhorne Slim – August 5, 2008 (FLACs)
Kemado Records will release Be Set Free, Langhorne Slim‘s third album, on September 29. Our friend Marni calls the album “beautiful, gut-wrenching, and cinematic…it captures the feel of seeing Langhorne live, which is an experience unto itself.” Here’s an MP3 of “I Love You, But Goodbye” from the new album.
Mr. Slim will also tour the ‘States this fall, so here’s a FLAC download (see link above) of his August 5 show from last year. 2009 tourdates are after the jump.
If you like the downloads, let us know in the comments. Also, requests (for your favorite bands, not specific shows) are always welcome.
