April Smith and the Great Picture Show – “Terrible Things” (Video)

Just in time for Halloween, April Smith and the Great Picture Show have released the video for “Terrible Things.” Directed by Ryan Stober, the clip stars Smith as a homicidal homemaker — whom she describes as “Judy Garland meets Sweeney Todd” — who kills people, grinds them up, and serves them to dinner guests. People with squeamish dispositions needn’t worry — thanks to Smith’s impish performance and the upbeat, swinging song, the video induces more laughs than cringes.

“Terrible Things” is just a taste of Smith and company’s terrific debut album, Songs For A Sinking Ship. They’re currently touring in support of the record, but unfortunately don’t have a San Diego date planned. They do have a 2-day gap between Austin and LA, though, so maybe they’ll fit us in. Smith nearly blew the roof off the Casbah the last time she came to town, so hopefully she won’t mind doing it again. Click here for the rest of her tour dates.

On November 27 at The Casbah, Dawes will celebrate the end of their epic fall tour. We can’t wait to see them, and we can’t wait to give away two tickets to the show.

The L.A. indie rockers released their debut album, North Hills, about a year ago, and it has received rave reviews across the board. Rolling Stone called them “Rookies of the Year,” Paste called them “Best of What’s Next,” and Daytrotter declared North Hills “hands down one of the finest records of 2009.” It can’t hurt that Wilco heartthrob Pat Sansone appears on the release. They also recently recorded a live session with The Morning Benders (see above).

We’re offering two tickets to see Dawes at the Casbah on 11/27. To enter the contest, just comment below and include your email address in the form (your email won’t be visible to the public). The winner will be chosen at random on November 24, 2010. Full list of Dawes tour dates is below.

The Rumble Gets Cinematic

As we mentioned last week, this Saturday’s installment of The Rumble at Bar Pink is Echotone-themed.

Echotone is a documentary about the blossoming Austin, TX music scene, and has been described by the AV Club as “beautifully shot, cleverly edited, and suffused with the dark, tenacious humor of the musicians and artists…a timely valentine with purpose.”

In conjunction with the film, Bar Pink patrons and Rumble regulars will be treated to performances by Sunset and White White Lights — two bands featured in the documentary. There will even be a preview of Echotone itself which, if the (below) trailer is any indication, shall be most excellent.

Saturday will also serve as a nice introduction to local up-and-comers Chairs Missing who just released a new EP and are slated to play Sezio’s epic Four Day Weekend event in November. Chairs Missing are stand up guys.

As always, admission to The Rumble is free and delicious Trumer Pils is a mere $3. DJ Tropical Popsicle will man the turntables between sets; we challenge you to say his name five times fast.

In case you haven’t heard, The Rumble is a monthly showcase of local and international indie talent. This month’s event is sponsored by Future Sounds, Indigenous, San Diego: Dialed In, Bedouin Vintage Collective, BMI, M-Theory Records, Reversal Films, Echotone, Trumer Pils, and your friendly neighborhood Owl and Bear.

The trailer for Echotone, as well as MP3s and photos are below.

Poetic Memory: The Prids (List)

Over the course of their career, The Prids have released a slew of excellent records. But it wasn’t until this year — when the rural Missourians released Chronosynclastic — that things really got going.

Chronosynclastic is about experience, and Prids primaries David Frederickson and Mistina La Fave have plenty of it. Their tumultuous relationship has taken them from love to marriage to divorce but, all the while, they’ve kept the band alive. That hard-won balance between harmony and conflict is reflected in their songwriting.

Sometimes dark, other times steeped in joy, but always surprising, Chronosynclastic‘s melodies, boy/girl vocals, and addictive hooks make this band an underrated gem of 2010.

In the midst of their current U.S. tour, La Fave sent us a list of ten songs that comprise her Poetic Memory. The band doesn’t have any San Diego dates on the schedule, but we hope they’ll come back soon. Mistina’s Poetic Memory, a video for The Prids’ song “Break,” and a full list of tour dates are below. “Echotone” is a Documentary About the Austin Music Scene (Video)

In conjunction with October’s Rumble — which will highlight Echotone, a new documentary about the Austin, TX music scene — we are pleased to post the official Echotone trailer. The film follows a range of indie bands and their culture over a two-year period, spotlighting everything from the musicians to the venues, promoters, and city itself. According to the filmmakers, Echotone is best described as “a cultural portrait of the modern American city examined through the lyrics and lens of its creative class.”

The October Rumble in San Diego (more on that later) will feature two bands from the film, as well as a sneak preview of the documentary itself. Enjoy!
